UK board game and jigsaw brands on Meta run six recurring formats: real-reaction table play, "#1" or award proof cards, Christmas gift-guide carousels with order-by dates, calm British-made puzzle stories, separate family and adult versions, and prize or free-gift promotions. Each carries a CAP Code check before it runs.
This is for game and puzzle product brands. "Top 6" is a catalogue, not a ranking.
Creativy (creativy.co.uk) is a UK Meta ad creative agency for DTC product brands (CREATIVY LIMITED, Companies House 15501604). Not Creatify.ai, creativy.co.id, creativy.in or creativy.com.
- Each carries a CAP Code check before it runs.
- No verified source says which format wins.
- Brief by funnel stage; test in your own account.
Examples are public GB Ad Library ads, not Creativy clients, and aren't presented as compliant or non-compliant. Rules checked 6 Oct 2026; not legal advice. No live GB ad in the set we checked on 6 October showed an age mark clearly enough to illustrate this format.

| Format | What's on screen | Funnel | Rule to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real-reaction table play | Players laughing, review overlay | Top | CAP 3.45, 3.47, 3.49, 4.1 |
| "#1" / award proof card | Rank badge, award seal | Mid | CAP 3.7; ASA "No. 1" advice |
| Christmas gift-guide carousel | Gift-by-age cards, order-by date | Bottom | CAP 3.1, 3.9, 3.10, 3.30 |
| British-made puzzle craft | Making, materials, calm | Mid | CAP 3.7, 11.1, 12.1 |
| Family vs adult versions | Same game, two age cuts | Top/mid | CAP 5.4.2, 5.5, 18; Meta teens |
| Prize / free-gift promo | Jackpot, draw, free item | Bottom | CAP 8.17, 8.19, 8.20, 3.23 |
Real-reaction table play
Example (filmable): friends mid-game; a laugh in the first two seconds; a review quote on screen; CTA.
UK check: CAP 3.45: "Marketing communications must make clear where consumer reviews have been incentivised." CAP 3.47: "Marketers must hold documentary evidence that a testimonial or endorsement used in a marketing communication is genuine, unless it is obviously fictitious, and hold contact details for the person who, or organisation that, gives it."
CAP 3.49: "Claims that are likely to be interpreted as factual and appear in a testimonial must not mislead or be likely to mislead the consumer." Edgy party humour is judged on context and audience (CAP 4.1).
Funnel: top. Test: is each quote traceable?
"#1" and award claims: what the ASA says
The ASA's advice on “No. 1” claims (11 Apr 2025):
"Unless the claim is likely to be understood to have another meaning in the context of the ad, or the meaning is ambiguous, the ASA is likely to interpret ‘number 1’ claims in the same way as ‘best-selling’ or ‘leading’ claims."
"Marketing communications which do not make the basis of a ‘No.1’ claim clear are likely to be considered misleading."
On “best-selling”: "However, it is likely that comparative evidence relating to unit-sales, market share, or both, will be required."
Big Potato's Herd Mentality product page shows a stated basis: "*#1 in Board Games, Amazon US & UK, Dec 2024" and "Over a million sold, and winner of the 2023 Astra Play Award." A pattern, not an ASA endorsement.
Illustrative wording, not judgements on any live ad.
| Wording | Likely read as | Fix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| "#1 family game" (no basis) | Best-selling vs every rival | Add source, market, date | ASA "No. 1" advice |
| "#1 in Board Games, Amazon UK, Dec 2024" | Ranked claim, basis shown | Hold the ranking evidence | CAP 3.7 |
| "Award-winning" | Ambiguous | Name the award and year | ASA "No. 1" advice |
| "Bestselling brand" | Whole-market comparison | Unit-sales or share data | ASA "Best-selling" advice |
| "Over a million sold" | Factual sales claim | Keep sales records | CAP 3.7 |
Christmas gift guides and order-by dates
Example (still or carousel): cards by player group, price, delivery charge, last order date, late items named. (Our stationery post covers gifting calendars.)
High Seat was a furniture retailer's website, emails and leaflet, not a Meta ad. The same rules apply to a Meta carousel: put Christmas delivery exceptions in the ad. The ASA upheld it on 12 February 2025 under CAP 3.1, 3.9 and 3.10:
"We considered that the qualifying information was not sufficiently prominent in ads (a)–(d) for consumers to be able to understand that not all items qualified for guaranteed delivery before Christmas. We therefore concluded that the claims of guaranteed delivery before Christmas in the ads were misleading."
UK check: prices need delivery charges (CAP 3.20). For "ends midnight", CAP 3.30: "Marketing communications must not falsely claim that the marketer is about to cease trading or move premises. They must not falsely state that a product, or the terms on which it is offered, will be available only for a limited time to deprive consumers of the time or opportunity to make an informed choice."
Funnel: bottom. No live UK card showed order-by dates.
Calm, British-made puzzle craft
Example (filmable): pieces being cut, hands fitting them, a quiet evening table, the provenance line, CTA.
Provenance is a claim. The Wentworth creator video below says "Precision laser-cut in Britain using sustainable wood & unique whimsies." Hold evidence for "in Britain" and "sustainable wood" (CAP 3.7, 11.1).
UK check: keep wellbeing to "a calm hour off-screen" unless you have trials. CAP 12.1: "Objective claims must be backed by evidence, if relevant consisting of trials conducted on people." For recycled or wood-source lines, CAP 11.1: "The basis of environmental claims must be clear. Unqualified claims could mislead if they omit material information."
Funnel: mid.
Family and adult versions by age
Confident Games' Extreme Outliars product page (UK; not a Meta ad) splits "AGES 14+ Funny & cheeky questions. For friends & family." from "AGES 17+ Taboo questions. For fun nights with mates." Toys for under-8s are in our baby and kids post.
Meta's Help Centre (October 2026), "About advertising to teens": "Some audience and campaign options are not available when you create ads that include people under 18 (or older in some countries) in your desired audience." Worldwide, it lists as unavailable for teens "Detailed targeting (interests, behaviours and demographics)", "Lookalike audiences" and "Advantage+ catalogue ads".
It adds: "Ads with locations in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland can't deliver to audiences under 18 (since November 2023)." The page names no UK rule, and the UK is outside the EU and EEA, so GB ads can still reach 13–17s under the worldwide limits.
Family cut: CAP 5.4.2 says ads "must not include a direct appeal to children to buy an advertised product or persuade their parents or other adults to buy an advertised product for them." CAP 5.5 bars targeting direct-response ads at children (under 16).
Example (two ad sets): one game filmed twice: a family cut showing the box's age mark; an 18+ adult cut with no childlike cues.
No live GB ad in the set we checked on 6 October showed an age mark clearly enough to illustrate this format.
| Setting | Family version | Adult version | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 13+ possible; teen limits apply | Set 18 | Meta teens page |
| Interests | Unavailable for 13–17s | Adult interests, no toy brands | Meta; CAP guidance |
| Lookalikes / custom lists | Unavailable for 13–17s | Available | Meta teens page |
| Catalogue ads | Advantage+ catalogue unavailable | Available | Meta teens page |
| Creative | No direct appeal to children | Keep adult themes from under-18s | CAP 5.4.2; CAP guidance |
| Drinking games | Not applicable | Under-18 media ≤ 25% | CAP 18.15 |
Prize draws and free gifts
Example (still): prize or gift, how to enter, closing date, link to terms.
UK check: CAP 8.17 requires significant conditions. On dates, CAP 8.17.4.b: "Unless the promotional pack includes the promotional item or prize and the only limit is the availability of that pack, prize promotions and promotions addressed to or targeted at children are likely to need a closing date". CAP 8.20: "Promoters must not exaggerate consumers' chances of winning prizes. They must not include a consumer who has been awarded a gift in a list of prize winners."
CAP 3.24: "Marketing communications must make clear the extent of the commitment the consumer must make to take advantage of a "free" offer."
Funnel: bottom. No live UK prize or free-gift card was found.
What the ASA has ruled on games and toys
None of these rulings was a Meta ad; each maps a principle.
Monopoly Casino (upheld, 8 May 2019; a display banner on the Mirror Online website; CAP 16.1, 16.3.12): "We considered that Monopoly was a family game generally played by or with children, and that under-18s would therefore recognise and find the ad’s references to it appealing." Principle: keep adult cuts free of family-game cues.
Go for Broke (not upheld, 30 March 2022; TV; BCAP): casino-like elements were acceptable in a clear family-game ad.
IMC Toys (upheld, 15 June 2022; a children's-site banner styled like game tiles; CAP 2.1, 2.3). Principle: ads children see must be obviously ads.
Plum-Marketing (upheld, 12 March 2025; an Amazon.co.uk listing showing very young children with magnetic blocks; CAP 1.3, 4.5, 5.1). Principle: children shown must match the age grade.
Party games for adults: the extra checks
Run the adult version as its own ad set at minimum age 18. CAP's age-restricted ads guidance (September 2025) advises: "Avoid youth interests/trends (e.g. toy brands, teen influencers)." It adds: "The same expectation would apply to ads unsuitable for under-18s because of the creative content of the ad; for example, because it is sexually explicit, depicts or suggests especially violent acts etc."
Drinking games bring in CAP section 18, which covers ads that "feature or refer to alcoholic drinks". Drinking can't be framed as a challenge (CAP 18.4). CAP 18.15: "Marketing communications must not be directed at people under 18 through the selection of media or the context in which they appear. No medium should be used to advertise alcoholic drinks if more than 25% of its audience is under 18 years of age."
Board games aren't age-restricted, so the 25% limit binds drinking games via section 18, not every adult game.
